How To Move House

Moving house is one of the stressful life events. When I first came to London I had a score of addresses in three years. After the first moves me quite well. I had to! This is what I did:

1. Pack well in advance

Used to me how wild some people in our house left it until the last minute. The result was that it might be coming and going of the old place to new, days later, during the last pot plant or some cutlery.

Make a decision that you are leaving this house forever, then do not stay one minute more of what you have to. Otherwise you are wasting time that could be more profitably spent on something else.

2. Put small things in a large container.

This saves several trips. Rugged mid-size savings of a lifetime, as they can be stacked easily.

3. The containers should be light enough to lift a person.

Some people try to fill a large box with books, for example. The result: you can not get up, or worse, is just light enough to lift someone try and put on his back.

4. First in, last out.

You will be putting carpet in the first place, presumably, it should be the last in the van. If you're super organized you can decorate the new house "on the fly." Otherwise, put your stuff in the smallest room in the new place and then move on from there, when everything was moved in. This avoids the need to move things between rooms later.

5. Leaving behind what no longer required.

If you've always hated the couch, left behind. Some people have a curious mind pack-rat, loves to hoard. If you are not the hoarding of gold or jewels, but the jam jars, and newspapers, leave them behind.

6. Rent a large van with a great man.

This should be the number one tip. The idea of a big van is that you make fewer trips, ideally only one. Some people try to save money by using their cars, or a friend with a mini van. The result: many more days of travel. You get cheese off, and so is his friend. Instead of decorating your new place, which is still in the midst of the old.

Moving house is stressful. Get it done as fast as you can. The largest van rental you can find.

7. Many hands make light work.

Once you've hired the big van, get as many friends as you can be involved in the movement. If you're really organized, you can move the house to the middle of the day. I did this once, to the surprise and gratitude that the truck driver uses. Who had been waiting a day slog.

8. Make space for parking his truck.

Cordon enough space to park his truck driver, so you can park next to the house.

9. Cancel utilities.

A bit of a clear, really. You do not want strangers running bills in your name. Let utilities know the date you're due to move.
