Greenhouse In America

In the United States must be heat, but the ease with which any of the clever men in this country means to provide the necessary heat with barely any expense or trouble! In most cases the heat can move from room fireplace, for everything you want is to completely avoid frost.

There are here not to the Sun, even in the coldest weather, and if the house were green on the eastern side of the house, the cold would not be a big nuisance. But in any case, the heat needed to keep the frost can be easily obtained.

A thermometer should be kept in the green house. The heat should be about sixty degrees in the day hours and forty-five in the evening.

In England, they need very little fire in their home green, except in very cold, in fact, rarely have. Their great want is that the sun, so nothing is going to do well without sunlight, and America has much of this even in cold weather.

So, if frost is maintained effectively by itself would be beautiful plants in winter. For an additional heat, growth and flowering is constant, and a green home could be one of the most beautiful and pleasant things in the world.

Of the various plants suitable for a greenhouse, and treatment of each, I will speak on the head of flowers, and in this place, just add a few guidelines for the management, which are applicable to all assemblage.

The air is the main thing, after the maintenance of frost. The air is given by pushing up or drawing down, the lights, which form the top or roof of the green house. Always give the air, when there is no fear of frost. Provide heat and air at the same time, if time is not enough to dispense with gentle heat. Because, without air, the plants will become sickly.

They have lungs as well as us and, although they can live for a time, without air, to be a pain in the eyes instead of a delight for the viewer. If the side and front, and the top of the green house, be of glass, (which is
better), then the air can make it, instead of giving to push or pull down the lights at the top.

Plants of any type or size, must be what the English called pots, and what Americans call flasks. Perhaps I may speak so, for once, on the shape and size, and the planting in these pots. The general form is well known, but the pots should never be crystal. Plain clay pots are better and cheaper.

There should be a hole in the bottom center of each pot, plant, or not to live there for a long time and never grow up in it at all. This hole should be in proportion to the size of the pot, and pots may be 4 inches to 18 inches long on top and 4 inches to 18 inches deep, with one third less than the entire bottom at the top. The smallest hole should be about the size of a half dollar.

In addition to the pot, is not what the English call a bread for the pot to stand, which should be about 2 inches deep and as wide as the top of the pot, and, of course a third wider than the bottom of the pot. This bread should be of the same materials with the pot itself.

I mentioned in passing, wooden boxes to put things where the plants, but I must warn the reader against this practice, provided they can be avoided, especially for small plants.

We see plants thus cultivated, placed in the windows, and sometimes grow quite well. Naranjos, Grande myrtles, and other large exotic animals, are planted in tubs. Would have great difficulty in getting the things of earth large enough for these purposes in addition to the constant danger of breaking.

But I am very happy to be mud and that is used is preferable to wood, and this view is based on actual experience. In my warm bed, 1819, which sowed the seeds of various kinds in small wooden boxes. I had no pots in hand and get to New York requires more time than I was willing to lose.
